Canadian Bishop Found Severely Beaten in Rectory

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist A man has been taken into custody after severely beating a bishop inside the rectory of Sacred Heart Cathedral in British Columbia. CBC News is reporting that Bishop David Monroe, 69, was found bleeding on the floor of the church rectory after being attacked by a deranged man who left him in serious condition who is believed to have beaten him with a blunt object. Another priest, who came to the bishop's aid, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the incident while trying to ward off the attacker. "We pray for the bishop and for the conversion of the guy who hurt the bishop," said Fr. Derrick Cameron. "Certainly, he [Monroe] could have died if we weren't there. Timing-wise, he would have bled to death." Apparently, the assailant fled the scene but police later tracked him down and found him hiding in the shed at his father's home nearby. "We started backtracking to see what else had gone on in the evening, and one thing that did catch our eye was that a couple hours previous there was an adult male that was brought to the Kamloops hospital by some family members who were concerned for his mental health," police Staff Sgt. Garry Kerr told CBC. "They said his mental state was quite deteriorated and he was apparently having some delusions of some sort involving religion." The attack, which occurred on Friday, left the Bishop in serious condition. He is not expected to be released from the hospital until this Saturday. "I was at the hospital [Friday] night and was able to speak … very, very briefly with the bishop," Kerr said. "The most severe injuries the bishop had were all above the neck and face and [he was] severely, severely beaten. We are fortunate, quite frankly, that it was not a double murder … I mean, the scene was that horrific, and I am just glad to say that he [the suspect] is in custody." The suspect, whose name has not been released, is currently undergoing a psychological evaluation. © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
