AFA Ends Gap Boycott

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist After a nationwide boycott that resulted in thousands of phone calls, e-mails and petitions, Gap stores have tossed aside their politically correct “holiday” ads and have decided to put Christ back into Christmas. The millions-strong American Family Association (AFA), orchestrated the boycott two weeks ago against Gap, Inc., which owns the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic stores. The company has been refusing for years to use the word “Christmas” in its television commercials, newspaper ads and in-store promotions. The Gap recently issued a statement to shoppers saying that they recognize “that many traditions are celebrated throughout this season and we feel it is important to display holiday signage that is inclusive to everyone.” However, those who celebrate other holidays aren’t spending millions on Christmas gifts, which is why the AFA demanded that if they want the Christmas business, they ought to recognize Christmas for what it is – the birth of Christ. Until they agreed to do so, the AFA called for a boycott of all Gap-owned stores which resulted in an avalanche of negative publicity for the company. “Gap has heard you loud and clear,” said AFA president Donald E. Wildmon. “On November 28, Gap's Old Navy division broadcast a television commercial featuring its ‘Supermodelquins’ proudly cheering ‘Merry Christmas,’ along with Christmas trees, lights and ornaments.” As a result, the AFA has decided to end the Christmas boycott. “Thanks to your involvement, retailers are listening - and they are changing the way they do business!” Wildmon says.
