What's Wrong with Wearing Occult or Native American Symbols?

JE asks: "Would you consider the presence of a Dream Catcher an open door to the occult? I've never been comfortable with their use for children  . . . I have a necklace & earring set of Dreamcatchers sitting in my jewelry box. . . . (A)fter reading about some of your other posts about jewelry I've been thinking that in addition to pitching the "Mary Poppins" book set I never got around to reading, I should pitch the Dream Catcher jewelry as well. Could you maybe tell us a little more about what to look out for in jewelry? Or would that be a whole 'nother Learn to Discern book?"

What Happened to Alex and Ani?

Only a few years ago, Alex and Ani bracelets were a sought after fashion statement produced by a tiny company that grew from relative obscurity into a shining star of entrepreneurial success. This same company, whose owner bragged about relying on bizarre New Age practices to guide her, is now barely mentioned. What happened?

Sacrifice for souls

Why were the visionaries of Fatima so motivated to offer prayers and sacrifices for souls? So much so they willingly endured the harshest of threats from the authorities, bore the scorn of their families, and regularly offered painful penances like going all day without food and water. Little Jacinta Marto’s thirst for making sacrifices was so insatiable that she never let an opportunity pass by to “offer it up.” She was often heard repeating the phrase, “I want to offer it up for the conversion of sinners” as she made each sacrifice.

State of grace

July 14

"...To be a true militant of Christ, you must be in the state of grace."

-Emil Neubert, SM, STD

Today’s Reflection:

How can you fight for Christ if His grace is not in you? How can you bring Him to souls when you yourself are far away from Him? How can one who is supernaturally dead give life to others? Ponder these questions during your time of examen this week and if need be, begin again by going to the sacrament of reconciliation.

Yoga and the Sin of Scandal

iStock_000059930560_SmallMany Catholics who insist that they’re “just doing the exercises” in their yoga class and therefore aren’t guilty of worshiping the Hindu gods those “exercises” represent often stop here when searching their conscience for any evidence of sin. Unfortunately, intending to worship Hindu gods isn’t the only way a Catholic who practices yoga can sin.

As a Christian, you are another Christ

July 13
"As a Christian, you are another Christ. As a militant, you continue the work of Christ. Imitate Christ, therefore, and let our Blessed Mother form you as she formed Christ."
-Emil Neubert, SM, STD
Today’s Reflection:
Like any good Christian mother, Our Blessed Mother desires to form you into "another Christ." Her knowledge, perfection and skill surpasses all earthly mothers. How does this knowledge impact the degree to which you will entrust yourself to Jesus through Mary?

Time is short

July 12

"Mary must be terrible to the devil and his crew, as an army ranged in battle, principally in these latter times, because the devil, knowing that he has but little time, and now less than ever, to destroy souls, will every day redouble his efforts and his combats. He will presently raise up cruel persecutions and will put terrible snares before the faithful servants and true children of Mary, whom it give him more trouble to conquer than it does to conquer others."

-St. Louis De Montfort, True Devotion to Mary

Today’s Reflection:

What does this passage reveal to you about the times in which we live and your role in them?

Queen of the Apostles

July 11
"It is not an empty flattery to bestow on Mary the title of Queen of the Apostles. Just as she assisted the Apostles, the teachers of the infant church with the support and advice of a mother, so we must affirm that at all times and in all ways she accords her assistance to all those who inherit the office of the Apostles."
-Pope Benedict XV
Today’s Reflection:
Mary's role as Queen of Apostles did not end with the coming of the Holy Ghost. In fact, it was only beginning. Just as she interceded for the Apostles and the early Church, she desires to intercede for us in our task of conquering the world for Christ, through the power of her spouse, the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual mother

July 10

"Behold thy Mother."

-John19:27

Today’s Reflection:

Our Lord Jesus confided His mother to us. She gave Him natural life. She gives us supernatural life. She sustains and nurtures supernatural life in us by the grace of light, love, and strength that she obtains on our behalf through her intercession.

As Christ's militants, we are called to imitate Mary, as spiritual mother to others, through our own intercession, prayers, and love. Who can you spiritually mother today?
