The View (Finally) Apologizes

After a month of intense pressure, The View co-host Joy Behar finally apologized to the public today for offensive comments made against Christians.

During the “Hot Topics” segment of The View yesterday, co-host Whoopi Goldberg brought up an interview that took place on Monday night between Vice President Mike Pence and Sean Hannity. The two were discussing the February 13 episode of The View in which Behar and co-host Sunny Hostin made disparaging remarks about the Vice President’s faith, intimating that Christianity was dangerous and a “mental illness.” The comments sparked a firestorm of protest which resulted in Behar making a personal call to Pence to offer an apology.

The network played a clip of the exchange where Pence said, “I give Joy Behar a lot of credit. She picked up the phone. She called me. She was very sincere. And she apologized. One of the things my faith teaches me is grace. Forgive as you have been forgiven.”

Pence continued: “I said to Joy, ‘Of course, I forgive you.’ That’s a part of my faith experience. I did encourage her. And I’m still encouraging her to use the forum of that program or some other public forum to apologize to tens of millions of Americans who were equally offended.”

As the clip ended, Behar said, “So, I think Vice President Pence is right. I was raised to respect everyone’s religious faith. I fell short of that. I sincerely apologize for what I said.”

Her apology brought an immediate end to a growing campaign launched by the media-watchdog group, Media Research Center (MRC) , against not only ABC and the View, but also the advertisers for the show.

In a series of tweets  sent in the wake of yesterday's show, MRC president Brent Bozell said, “Our campaign against ‘The View’ and Joy Behar has concluded. Even though it took a full month, Joy Behar did the right thing today to publicly apologize for her offensive remarks.”

He continued: “Over 43,000 phone calls were placed to ABC and their advertisers demanding an apology. This clearly has taken a toll on ABC and has left a black mark on advertisers Clorox, Gerber, Oreo and HomeAdvisor who were utterly silent in reply to the uproar from their Christian consumers.”

He added: “While our campaign is over, let it be made clear: we will not hesitate to come after any TV personality or media figure who engages in this type of anti-Christian bigotry. . . . Nor will we spare any effort to denounce the sponsors of such hatred. Christians are fed up, and aren’t going to take it anymore.”
