80% of Americans Say Faith Important in Daily Life

by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist In the wake of the recent ruling by a Wisconsin judge that the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional, eight out of ten Americans told pollster Rasmussen that faith is at least somewhat important in their daily lives with 64 percent saying they believe the ruling of judges is more anti-religious than the Founding Fathers intended. Rasmussen Reports found that 80 percent of Americans say their religious beliefs are at least somewhat important to their daily lives and 57 percent describing it as “very important.” Christians topped the list of those who say their faith is important with 82% of Evangelicals, 65% of other Protestants and 46% of Catholics compared to 37 percent of other beliefs. Gender and race make a difference, the poll found. For instance, women are more likely than men to feel their faith is very important to their lives and 66 percent of African-Americans say their religious faith is very important, compared to 56 percent of whites. Married adults are more inclined than unmarrieds to rate their faith as very important to daily living. Another surprising discovery is that 63 percent of adults say they pray at least once a day. Nineteen percent (19%) pray occasionally, while only 15 percent rarely or never pray at all. Adults who attend church regularly are more inclined to pray daily. As a result of these findings, it should come as no surprise that the majority of Americans disagreed with the recent ruling of a Wisconsin judge who declared the National Day of Prayer to be unconstitutional. Sixty percent of Americans favor government recognition of a National Day of Prayer. In addition, recent Rasmussen polls found that only 21 percent of Americans think that rulings by judges in recent years concerning religion in public life have correctly interpreted the U.S. Constitution with a whopping 64 percent saying they believe many of these rulings have been more anti-religious than the Founding Fathers intended. © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
