“Safe School Czar” Promoted Smut to School Children

by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist  Controversy is once again swirling around Kevin Jennings, President Obama’s “Safe Schools Czar,” who founded a pro-homosexual educational organization that recommended books to children as young as kindergarten age that include graphic depictions of deviant sexual activity. Jennings is the founder of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), an organization whose stated mission is to create educational resources, student organizing programs and public policy that are supposed to “increase tolerance of gay students and decrease bullying.”  As part of its educational focus, GLSEN maintains a recommended reading list for children from grades K-12, as well as for teachers. This list includes fiction, non-fiction, memoirs and poetry. According to Scott Baker of,  when these materials were reviewed, “We were unprepared for what we encountered,” Baker said. “Book after book after book contained stories and anecdotes that weren’t merely X-rated and pornographic, but which featured explicit descriptions of sex acts between pre-schoolers; stories that seemed to promote and recommend child-adult sexual relationships; stories of public masturbation, anal sex in restrooms, affairs between students and teachers, five-year-olds playing sex games . . . . One memoir even praised becoming a prostitute as a way to increase one’s self-esteem. “Above all, the books seemed to have less to do with promoting tolerance than with an unabashed attempt to indoctrinate students into a hyper-sexualized worldview.” Baker believed that unless these revelations were carefully documented, the American public would have a hard time believing it. “Mere descriptions on our part could not convey the emotional gut reaction one gets when seeing what Kevin Jennings wants kids to read as school assignments,” Baker writes. Reaction to the report was explosive. Jennifer Hartline, a Catholic Army wife and mother of three who writes for Catholic Online published an open letter to President Obama calling for Jennings’ removal. “I am unutterably sick to death of the hyper-sexualization of our children in this culture, and I will not silently allow you and Jennings to further this twisted agenda in our school system under the banner of tolerance and equality,” she writes. “How dare you use the power of your office to pollute my children’s futures with rampant, forced, immoral sexual indoctrination!” After calling for Jennings’ immediate dismissal she writes: “The responsibility is yours. If you will not protect America’s kids from this kind of corruption, then you are unfit to lead this great nation, a nation founded on the truth of the authority and power of God.” Author Michelle Malkin was similarly incensed. “Would Barack and Michelle Obama approve of their daughters reading this in their classrooms?” she asks, then goes to pose the more ominous question. “Is Kevin Jennings bringing his reading list to your children’s school?” Citizens are being urged to contact their representatives to demand the dismissal of Kevin Jennings.
