Pelosi Stumbles on Late-Term Abortion Question

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was caught off guard by a shrewd question from the press asking her to explain why she thinks Kermit Gosnell's killing of babies born alive after late term abortions is wrong, and yet condemns the preliminary passage of a bill banning all late-term abortions in the U.S.

According to The Weekly Standard, the question arose during a press conference yesterday when House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi condemned the passage of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which would ban all abortions during the last four months of pregnancy with the exception of when the life and physical health of the mother is at risk. The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill on a 20-12 vote and is expected to bring it to the floor of the House sometime next week.

During the news conference, the reporter asked Rep. Pelosi: "Madam Leader, you mentioned the bill that passed out of the House Judiciary committee. Members who have proposed that bill have done that in the wake of this murder trial in Philadelphia. They argue that there really isn't much of a moral difference between what someone like Dr. Kermit Gosnell did to infants born at 23, 24, 25 weeks into pregnancy, and what can happen [legally] at a clinic down the road in Maryland where a doctor says that he'll perform an elective abortion 28 weeks into the pregnancy. So the question I have for you is what is the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did to a baby born alive at 23 weeks and aborting her moments before birth?"

Pelosi was taken aback by the question and accused the reporter of "savoring" the question, knowing it was a "gotcha" moment.

"Could you answer the question," the reporter insisted.

"Let me just tell you this," Pelosi said. "What was done in Philadelphia was reprehensible and everybody condemned it. For them to decide to disrespect a judgment a woman makes about her reproductive health is reprehensible."

She then attempted to dismiss the reporter by asking the press corps, "Next question?"

"So what's the moral difference?" the reporter pressed, refusing to give up. "I just asked a simple question. … What's the moral difference then between 26 weeks elective abortion and the killing of that same infant born alive. This is the issue that they're trying to . . ."

"This is not the issue," Pelosi said, cutting him off. "They are saying that there's no abortion. It would make it a federal law that there would be no abortion in our country. You're taking the extreme case. You're taking the extreme case. And what I'm saying to you is what happened in Philadelphia was reprehensible. And I do not think you . . . I'm not going to have this conversation with you because you obviously have an agenda. You're not interested in having an answer," she said, obviously flustered.

"I've responded to you to the extent that I'm going to respond to you," she continued. "Because I want to tell you something. As the mother of five children, my oldest child was 6 years old the day I brought my 5th child home from the hospital, as a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I don't think it should have anything to do with politics. And that's where you're taking it and I'm not going there."

The reporter sums up her answer quite succinctly. "It was a simple question. You didn't answer."

Not only does the speaker distort the bill into what will no doubt be used as ammo in the phony "war on women" by saying that it bans all abortions [which it clearly does not], she then tries to use her Catholic faith to justify the so-called "sacred ground" of abortion!

This is one confused woman who is in need of very serious prayer, as are all the children who will die so painfully because lawmakers like her refuse to set aside their ideology even when it means sparing innocent lives.
