Will Planned Parenthood Records Scandal Bring Down Kathleen Sebelius?

The largest grass roots pro-life organization in America is now calling upon Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretary, to resign over the destruction of crucial Planned Parenthood records involving child rape charges during her governorship.

LifeNews.com is reporting that the American Life League (ALL) believes Sebelius should resign over the growing scandal in Kansas involving Steve Six, a state attorney general she appointed, who destroyed documents relating to 107 criminal charges filed against the abortion business.

The charges alleged that Planned Parenthood failed to report on cases of child rape, that it failed to test whether an unborn child was viable before performing a late-term abortion as required by state law, and that it manipulated records that were submitted to the state to cover up those crimes. As a result of the destruction of the records, a court dismissed all of the felony charges against Planned Parenthood.

With evidence now strengthening the link between the illegal destruction of the records and Sebelius, ALL is demanding that Sebelius step down.

“At a time when the implementation of major changes to our health systems is drawing near we need a HHS secretary the people can trust to uphold the law and with the time to devote fully to the operation of that area of the government,” said Jim Sedlak, ALL’s vice president. “It is becoming clear that Secretary Sebelius is going to be distracted by the likely criminal allegations against her and her administration in Kansas.”

“As the leader of ALL’s efforts against Planned Parenthood we have long known of the connections between that organization and Sebelius,” Sedlak said. “With the growing data being unearthed by organizations and individuals in Kansas, it appears her legal culpability will be much larger than first thought.  Now is the time for Secretary Sebelius to resign.  Anything less would be a disservice to the American people and to those who believe that government officials are not above the law and their positions should be used to serve the public: not to thwart the law in order to advance individual ideology.”

Under Sebelius, the Kansas Health and Education Department (KHED) fought access by Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline to original copies of abortion reports needed to prosecute Planned Parenthood. In addition, police handwriting experts also found that some of the records that were provided had been manufactured.

“Kline had launched a criminal investigation that alleged Planned Parenthood had falsified records and failed to follow abortion law.  Kline ultimately got copies under court order but KHED later destroyed the originals,” he noted.

As a result of the scandal, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has asked the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation into the matter, which could incriminate Sebelius even further.

“Steve Six must be held accountable for this destruction of evidence and obstruction of justice,” said Operation rescue President Troy Newman. “What we have is a conspiracy to destroy evidence in order to protect Planned Parenthood. The more we learn, the more apparent it becomes that former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is at the heart of this political corruption. She appointed Six and controlled him and the KDHE under her administration. We must have an aggressive investigation of this scandal.”

He added: “We hope this investigation will be done impartially and without the political bias that tainted the Sebelius administration. While we are disappointed and troubled that the felony charges cannot proceed, we are pleased that 58 very serious counts related to illegal late-term abortions are moving forward. There is still some hope that a small measure of justice can still be achieved.”

A hearing is scheduled for February 22, 2012 on the remaining 58 criminal counts.
