Mainstream Media Ignores Grisly Abortion Trial

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Even though the mainstream media never misses a chance to tout the so-called "safe, legal abortion" industry in the U.S., they have chosen to almost completely ignore the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, an abortionist whose West Philadelphia clinic was dubbed a "house of horrors" by investigators.

Matthew Balan of Newsbusters is reporting that none of the three major networks - ABC, CBS, and NBC - have covered the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, which began on Monday. Gosnell is charged with murdering seven babies who were born alive at his facility, as well as a 41 year old woman who died after being given too much anesthesia.

Photos from inside the clinic show squalid conditions, blood stained examining tables, freezers stuffed full of fetal body parts including the tiny feet of aborted humans found preserved in glass jars. Untrained and unlicensed employees were permitted to perform abortions and administer anesthesia to women who came to the clinic seeking abortions, many of which were late-term and beyond the legal limit in the state of Pennsylvania.

Several employees in Gosnell's Women's Medical Center in West Philadelphia are also facing charges for their role in the killing of live infants and performing medical procedures without a license.

The lack of coverage is shocking, but not surprising. Back in January, 2011, when Gosnell was officially arrested, ABC completely ignored it, CBS Evening News devoted one story to it and NBC gave it just 50 words, Balan reports.

Some credit can be given to The New York Times (NYT) which chose to run an article about the trial on Tuesday of this week, although it was buried on page A-17. However, as Balan notes, NYT writer Jon Hurdle did have the courage to report the truth - that Gosnell is charged with killing babies by "plunging scissors into their necks and ‘snipping’ their spinal cords.”

Refusing to report this story is the perfect example of why the "safe, legal abortion" fairy tale persists in the U.S. - because of ideologues in the media and the abortion industry who say they're looking out for women but act in ways that belie the claim. If the industry and the media really cared about women's "reproductive health" we would be seeing this story at the top of every news report in the country - and feminist leaders would be on the air expressing their outrage.

Instead, we get silence - both about the babies whose lives ended so painfully, and the desperately poor women who made Gosnell a wealthy man because they had no "choice" but to use his filthy clinic.

The only good thing about this story is that in spite of the silence, the culprits in these grisly crimes may soon get the justice they deserve.
