Cancer Groups Downplay New Study Linking the Pill/Abortion to Breast Cancer

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist The national cancer establishment is continuing to stifle news of a study linking oral contraceptives with breast cancer. The same study also contains a reversal of position by a top National Cancer Institute researcher about the link between abortion and breast cancer. According to a press release by Karen Malek, head of the president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, which is dedicated to educating women about the deadly link, says both the study and the reversal of position by a top NCI researcher could have serious implications on the health care debate. "Obviously, more women will die of breast cancer if the NCI fails in its duty to warn about the risks of OCs and abortion and if government funds are used to pay for both as a part of any healthcare bill," said Mrs. Malec. The study in question was published in April 2009 by Jessica Dolle et al. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and examined the relationship between oral contraceptives (OCs) and a particularly malignant form of breast cancer known as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in women under age 45. Dolle's team showed that women who start using OCs before age 18 multiply their risk of TNBC by 3.7 times. Recent users of OCs within the last one to five years multiply their risk by 4.2 times. They also found a statistically significant 40 percent risk increase for women who have had abortions and listed abortion among "known and suspected risk factors." Included in this study was an admission by NCI researcher Louise Brinton that abortion does indeed incrase a woman's risk of breast cancer. Dr. Brinton was the chief organizer of the 2003 NCI workshop on the abortion-breast cancer link which falsely assured women that the non-existence of the link was "well established."   "Although the [Dolles] study was published nine months ago, the NCI, the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and other cancer fundraising businesses have made no efforts to reduce breast cancer rates by issuing nationwide warnings to women," Mrs. Malek said.   The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer (http://www.abortionbreastcancer.com/abc.html) is an international women's organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer.   © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
