By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) has ordered all scientists and federal agencies involved in manipulating data to prove their theories of man-made global warming to “retain [related] documents” pending an investigation. According to a report by New American, Sen. Inhofe, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, announced plans to launch the investigation on Nov. 24 after hackers released e-mails from a global-warming research center in England that revealed widespread manipulation of data by scientists to prove global warming is man-made. The e-mails indicate participation in the scam by scientists at some of the U.S.'s most prestigious universities as well as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Obama’s science czar, John Holdren, who once called for forced abortions to save the planet from global warming, is also implicated in the scandal. "The stakes in this controversy are significant, as it appears that the basis of federal programs, pending EPA rulemakings, and cap-and-trade legislation was contrived and fabricated," Sen. Inhofe said in a press release. "Lawmakers have an obligation to determine the extent to which the so-called 'consensus' of global warming, formed with billions of taxpayer dollars, was contrived in the biased minds of the world's leading climate scientists."   Bryan Zumwalt, legislative staffer for environmental issues for Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) called Climategate "the greatest act of scientific fraud in history" and lamented the millions of grant money invested in the bogus theory over the years as well as its impact on U.S. climate policy such as the controversial cap-and-trade bill. "The e-mails and other released data also appear to implicate professors at some of the U.S.'s premier universities in a coordinated effort to achieve the IPCC agenda as well as to garner government grants," Zumwalt said. In the House, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said investigators are looking into involvement in the scandal by White House Science Czar John Holdren. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Holdren participated in some of the e-mail exchanges and has based many of his policy decisions on research published by IPCC scientists implicated in the scandal. However, even proponents of global warming are calling for the resignation of one of the scientists at the center of the controversy, Phil Jones. According to George Monbiot, a leading proponent of global warming, Jones’ research greatly influenced recent IPCC reports upon which much climate change legislation is based, including the cap-and-trade bill which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in June. Another version of the same legislation is pending in the Senate. Writing for The Guardian, Monbiot called Climategate a "major blow,” saying the situation could "scarcely be more damaging" to environmentalists' agenda.
