In a big win for the pro-life movement, a U.S. appeals court ruled that the block on Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood imposed by the Big Beautiful Bill can remain in place while lawsuits proceed.CBSNews.com is reporting that the new ruling overturns a preliminary injunction issued earlier this summer by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani that put a temporary hold on enforcement of the bill’s provision that blocks abortion providers from receiving federal taxpayer dollars via Medicaid. This provision resulted in cutting off hundreds of millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.
As expected, Planned Parenthood and member organizations in Utah and Massachusetts filed a lawsuit in July against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
They claimed the law violates their First Amendment rights and would cause irreparable harm to millions of their patients who rely upon Medicaid funding for essential health services like birth control, STI and cancer screenings.
Talwani ultimately agreed and stated that the disruption of these services could result in an increase in unintended pregnancies and untreated STI’s.
The Trump administration immediately appealed the ruling and prevailed in the decision by the appeals court panel to allow the government to block Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood while legal challenges proceed.
“We are pleased the 1st Circuit has shut down Big Abortion’s desperate money grab,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The American people, through Congress, spoke clearly with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Taxpayers should not be forced to spend a dime funding a brutal industry that ends at least 1.1 million lives a year, harms women while providing dwindling, substandard health care services, and engages in partisan political activism – especially when more accessible, more comprehensive options outnumber Planned Parenthoods 15 to 1.” https://sbaprolife.org/newsroom/press-releases/federal-court-unblocks-defunding-of-big-abortion-businesses
She added: “We are confident the Trump administration will prevail against the abortion industry’s lawfare.”
