A nationwide petition campaign is underway to pressure Democratic lawmakers who are threatening to filibuster the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court to act in the interest of the nation, not partisan politics.

The Family Research Council (FRC) is sponsoring a grassroots campaign to put an end to the political posturing of Democratic lawmakers who are refusing to vote for Judge Gorsuch in spite of his superior qualifications.

The Senate is scheduled to vote as early as this Thursday on the Judge’s nomination and unless 60 favorable votes are cast, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be forced to invoke what is known as the “nuclear option” which is the elimination of the two-thirds majority for a simple 51-vote majority.

The problem with resorting to this option, which was first used by former Senate-majority leader Harry Reed (D-AZ) for lower court appintments, is that it could be used to ram through a more liberal justice should the balance of power shift in the Senate.

There are currently three aging justices who could very well be replaced within the next four years – Justice Anthony Kennedy who will turn 81 this July; Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who turned 84 last month; and Justice Stephen Breyer who will turn 79 on August 15.

“The current Supreme Court vacancy presents our nation with a critical decision and we have no time to waste,” writes FRC president Tony Perkins. “The confirmation of Neil Gorsuch is essential if we are to add a Justice to the High Court who will respect the Constitution and not legislate from the bench.”

But with the threat of a filibuster looming, it’s time for the citizenry to get involved and call an end to this destructive political posturing.

“We must give this everything we've got and stand united,” Perkins says, and is asking everyone to sign a petition asking all members of the U.S. Senate to put aside their partisan differences and do what’s right for the nation.

“I urge you to oppose the ongoing obstruction of the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court,” the petition reads. “Please vote to bring Judge Gorsuch’s nomination to the Senate floor for a vote and then vote to confirm his nomination. . . .The U.S. Senate must act in the interest of our nation and the Constitution by approving this nomination.”
