By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist A new poll has found that residents of Louisiana believe President George W. Bush did a better job handling Katrina than President Barack Obama has done with the oil spill. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, found that a majority of the state’s voters (50%), including 31 percent of Democrats, give Bush higher grades on handling the Katrina aftermath than Obama receives for the way he is dealing with the catastrophic Gulf oil spill. “Overall only 32 percent of Louisianans approve of how Obama has handled the spill to 62 percent who disapprove,” the pollster reports. “Thirty-four percent of those polled say they approved of how Bush dealt with Katrina to 58 percent who disapproved.” While the poll results indicate a lot of unhappiness with the President, the report found that British Petroleum (BP) is receiving the bulk of the blame in the disaster. Fifty-three percent of voters say they're angriest at the oil company compared to 29 percent who say their greatest unhappiness is with the federal government. Seventy-eight percent believe BP has the greatest responsibility for cleaning up the spill and 44 percent think BP CEO Tony Hayward should be fired. One thing the oil spill has not done is create a spike of opposition to offshore drilling in Louisiana, the report says, with 77 percent of voters still supporting it.
