By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Writer A national legal defense organization is coming to the aid of parents in a California school district that is mandating a controversial curriculum promoting lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) behaviors to their young children. According to the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI), the San Francisco Bay-area Alameda Unified School District has approved an LGBT curriculum for use with students from kindergarten through fifth grade, claiming the program is aimed at dealing with issues such as bullying and harassment. The district is not allowing parents to opt out of the classes. "The fundamental problem with the curriculum is it gives a monopoly to one segment of the population -- namely gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender persons -- on the issue of harassment," said PJI’s Kevin Snider to OneNewsNow. "And our position is that all students deserve safe schools, and that sexual orientation is only one of six protected classes. The other classes include race, gender, religion, disability, etc.; and so we have opposed this." Snider said the school board passed the curriculum in spite of the objection of 73 percent of the speakers from the community who attended the board meeting. In response, PJI is sending opt-out letters to the district on behalf of parents.
