In Serbia News is reporting that the Court of Appeal in New South Wales has allowed a new gender specification for a person after overturning a ruling that previously required all people to register themselves as either a male or female on registries of birth, death, and marriage.
The decision was made in the case of 52-year-old activist Norrie May-Welby who was born a male, underwent male-to-female surgery and then later decided he didn't feel like a woman either. He then came to the conclusion that he should be referred to as a neuter,
"The concepts of man or woman don’t fit me," May-Welby told The Telegraph in 2010. "The simplest solution is not to have any sex identification.”
Thanks to the court's decision, it is now legal to register oneself as being genderless.
From here-on, May-Welby will be referred to by the gender-neutral pronouns “zie” (instead of he/she) or “hir” (instead of him/her).
"The decision will affect people who have undergone gender reassignment surgery, as well as anyone who identifies as intersex or gender neutral," In Serbia reports. "It overturned a ruling that everyone must be registered as a man or a woman with the registry of births, deaths and marriages. It declared for the first time that word sex do not bear a binary meaning of 'male' or 'female'."
Officials have altered May-Welby's birth certificate to specify the neutral gender.
