War on Women Goes From Phony to Outright Lies

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

The "war on women" crowd is out in full force after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor or Hobby Lobby, but their usual baseless claims are even more striking this time because they are such a blatant distortion of the actual facts in the case.

Thankfully, women in high places are fighting back. The Daily Caller is reporting on how Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly appeared on the Bill O'Reilly Show last night and tore apart an MSNBC segment featuring the hapless Sandra Fluke, the "reproductive rights activist" whose only claim to fame is her outspoken insistence that taxpayers pay for her birth control pills.

"What this is really about at its base is trying to figure out as many ways as possible to limit women’s access to reproductive healthcare," Fluke declared on Chris Matthews' show last night.

In response, Kelly shot back, "She doesn't know what she's talking about."

And she doesn't. The Hobby Lobby case concerned only four of the 20 FDA approved contraceptives for which the mandate is demanding coverage. The four drugs are all abortificacients and even though Hobby Lobby has paid for its employees' contraceptive coverage for years, it refuses to pay for abortions.

How can a company that has paid for Sandra Fluke's precious pills for the last 20 years be guilty of wanting to limit women's access to reproductive rights? To make such a statement is so far removed from the actual facts that we can only call it what it is - an outright lie.

The U.S. Supreme Court certainly did nothing wrong in ruling that the government's attempt to force closely held companies such as Hobby Lobby, whose owners have strong religious convictions, to pay for these drugs was a violation of their constitutional rights and therefore unlawful.

Instead of respecting the law and "tolerating" the most fundamental right of Americans - the free exercise of their religion - the tyrannical Fluke and her fellow radical feminists are demanding that the government sidestep the U.S. constitution and force people to do what she thinks they ought to do.

Kelly was quick to point out that before this mandate, American women “were buying their own [birth control]; for the past 20 years and beyond, they’ve been buying their own. And then what happened was we passed Obamacare. And then Kathleen Sebelius had some of her HHS minions go down in the basement and write a regulation that said as part of Obamacare, you have to cover 20 out of 20 birth-control drugs — 20 out of 20. And then women like Sandra Fluke started saying, ‘I’m entitled. Oh my God, I didn’t realize how victimized I was all those years when I was paying for it on my own.’”

The Supreme Court rightly concluded that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was passed by President Bill Clinton and signed by many of the same Democrats who are now decrying the Hobby Lobby decision as a "war on women" must protect the rights of all Americans, not just those who agree with Ms. Fluke.

Nothing could be more indicative of the half-baked arguments that are being foisted on American women today than the verbiage on the signs that were held up to the cameras yesterday by the Planned Parenthood crowd - slogans that only made sense to those who didn't know the facts of the case.

"Birth Control is not my boss' business!" their signs screamed.

It certainly isn't any of his business - until you make him pay for it. Then it becomes a whole different story because now it's a matter of his bottom line, not your reproductive rights.

Most of us recognize this reality as life.

The anti-life crowd had great success with their "war on women" mantra two years ago. Shame on us if we let them get away with it this time!
