For those who have never heard of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the following quote should give you an idea of just how far from the Truth these writings wander.
“I am the first and I am the last I am She who is honored and she who is scorned I am the whore and the holy woman I am the wife and the virgin I am the bride and the bridegroom I am She, the Lord.” (Gnostic Magdalene Gospel)
As unfounded as this Gospel may be, it is resurrecting itself in various new forms of the New Age spirituality known as Goddess worship. As I explain in my book, The Learn to Discern Compendium, goddess worship and its sister religion, Wicca/witchcraft, is most often associated with the earth, the moon, and fertility. This goddess is usually described as an energy force inside every living and nonliving thing. It is particularly attractive to women who feel marginalized by what they perceive to be male-dominated churches which explains why it gradually infected Christianity and the Catholic Church by disaffected feminist theologians in the wake of Vatican II.
The following are a few of the latest examples of how this spirituality is being sold to women under the name of Mary Magdalene.
Founded by Claire Sierra, MA, LFT, a Reiki Energy Healer, Licensed Esthetician and author, she claims to have found the answer to “the whispers of your feminine soul calling you to something deeper.”
That “something deeper” is The Magdalene Path which is a journey inspired by “the hidden mystery and archetypal power of Mary Magdalene – someone who’s so much more than we were told she was.”
Sierra says that although Mary Magdalene was revered in her day and known as a powerful leader, teacher, healer, and “Apostle to the Apostles,” her legacy was hidden, defiled and stolen which resulted in a corrupt understanding of the power of the sacred feminine.
“She’s a goddess hiding in plain sight in the Christian gospels,” Sierra asserts. “As Sacred Feminine icon, Mary Magdalene activates a calling in women to soul sovereignty and embodied wholeness.”
Her on-line store features books such as The Magdalen Path: Awaken the Power of Your Feminine Soul, and the Goddess Coloring Book.
She also offers Magdalene Rosary prayer beads which are “traditionally used to aid the ritual experience, deepening the meditative prayer process, allowing you to go deeper into stillness and bliss.” Each set of beads is (which total 22 beads, the alleged “sacred number” of Mary Magdalene) is “blessed and anointed” by Sierra.
The Path of the Magdalene
Another version of the Magdalene Path was created by Dr. Melissa Sophia Joy, a Naturopathic Doctor, who describes herself as a Wisdom Teacher, Oracle, Mystic in the Magdalene-Sophia lineage, Energy Medicine Practitioner, and Medical Intuitive.
She claims to have received the inspiration to develop the Magdalene Path with an apparition of the Divine Mother, Sophia, in the form of the Holy Spirit.
As she describes, this apparition occurred in the middle of the night “in a storm of kundalini intensity. I awoke with my body convulsing and shaking. I felt immersed in holy power as she cleared my being making way for what was to come. At the end of this powerful experience, I heard a booming female voice reverberate in my being that said, ‘You Are of the Order of the Magdalene.’”
After this experience, she was ushered into an initiation process where she was “blessed with direct spirit contact and transmission with Mary Magdalene and many of the Order of the Magdalene.”
Once a person is initiated on this path, “you are called to a transformative and evolutionary spiritual journey of Divine Feminine Christ Consciousness,” she explains.
Joy’s blogs about the Path are filled with fanciful imaginings about Mary Magdalene, quoting from yet another apocryphal Gospel, the Gospel of Philip which claims that “The Lord loved Mary more than the disciples and he often kissed her on the mouth …” In this gospel, Mary is referred to as “koinonos” which is a Greek word that can mean anything from a spiritual partner to a marital partner. “Many legends say that Mary Magdalene was Yeshua’s beloved companion in marriage and also had a child with him.”
The Mary Magdalene Way
Another similar path, known as The Mary Magdalene Way, is being taught by a woman named Dr. Nicola Amadora, whose bio lists her as “a seasoned Spiritual Teacher, Psychologist and Hakomi/ Trauma Therapist, Feminine Leader, Author, and Speaker.
Amadora is reaching out to women who believe they have been called by Mary Magadalene into this new way.
“She appears in mysterious ways,” Amadora writes, “for some at night in a dream, for others at broad daylight waking an irresistible urge from deep inside…For centuries she [Mary Magdalene] was degraded, dismissed, and cast out. But suddenly women turn to her from everywhere, flocking into her fold.”
Amadora calls this a “radical spiritual path that unites human and divine, that leaves nothing and no one out. She ignites the soul fire and teaches us how to live love for real, in our bodies, in the streets of this world. Her gift is profoundly mystical and oh-so practical too.”
She offers courses such as the Mary Magdalene Immersion Course for $108 and The Way of the Sacred Feminine for $49.
It should be obvious that these teachings are not only non-Christian, but they are riddled with occultism, particularly in the creation and worship of false gods.
Christian women who are looking for a deeper immersion in the spiritual life will find more than they can ever imagine by looking more closely at the Mother of God and the many female saints, including the real St. Mary Magdalene, that have outlined the path to authentic transformation in Christ. Why settle for imposters when you can have the real thing?
