Girl Scouts Lead Utah’s Gay Pride Parade

girl scout logoA Girl Scout troop in Salt Lake City is continuing to prove the downward spiral of the organization as six members of Troop 1161 chose to lead the Salt Lake City Gay Pride Parade last Sunday carrying a banner that read, “Pride is . . . beautiful love!”

The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that troop 1161, which is sponsored by the Utah Pride Center and welcomes girls from gay and transgender families, led this year’s parade.

About 35,000 people gays, lesbians, transgenders, spectators and protestors were said to have attended the two-and-a-half-hour parade with many same-sex couples being married on the different floats as the parade progressed.

The six girls marched behind a rainbow flag bearing the Utah state seal and the American flag and waved enthusiastically at the crowd as they walked along.

According to the Tribune, the six girls who comprise Troop 1161 voted unanimously to participate in the event.

Accepting lesbians and transgenders is not a policy exclusive to Troop 1161 but is embraced by Girl Scouts USA.

"Our position is not new," said Andrea Bastiani Archibald, the Girl Scouts USA's chief girl expert to CNN just last month. "It conforms with our continuous commitment to inclusivity."

According to the Girl Scouts FAQ page, "Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child [who was born a boy] is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe."

Acceptance of transgendered children is only the latest in a long list of controversies surrounding the Girl Scouts from its connections to Planned Parenthood to presenting radical pro-abortion politicians such as Wendy Davis as role models. As a result, enrollment in the Girl Scouts has plummeted in the past decade. Membership declined 27 percent since 2003.
