Custody of the Senses

September 18

God be in my head

And in my understanding;

God be in my eyes

And in my looking;

God be in my mouth

And in my speaking;

God be in my heart

And in my thinking;

God be at my end

And in my departing.

Today's Reflection:

Classical spiritual writers talk about taking custody of the sense. How does this prayer reflect this good spiritual advice? How does taking custody of the senses assure that God will be at our “end” and in our “departing?” What sense do I most need to take custody of? In what one way can I begin to do so immediately?
