As part of a $10 million settlement, a major Texas children’s hospital that had been performing gender transition surgery on minor for years is now required to open the nation’s first official detransition clinic and to offer its services free-of-charge for five years. The Daily Signal is reporting on the landmark case involving Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH). The settlement requires the hospital to pay $10 million to resolve claims brought under the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act and the federal False Claims Act for billing Texas Medicaid for unallowable and illegal “gender-transition” interventions.
The settlement also compels the permanent and irrevocable termination of privileges of multiple physicians. The hospital is also required to amend their bylaws to specify that performance of gender-transition interventions triggers automatic relinquishment of medical staff privileges.
As required under the settlement, the hospital opened the new Detransition Clinic at the end of October. According to the clinic’s new website, it is now offering a variety of services including surgery, fertility counseling, speech pathology, endocrinology and psychological services to patients up to age 21 – all provided free-of-charge for five years. Those above the age of 21 will be able to receive additional obstetric and gynecologic care.
“This historic settlement is a resounding defeat for the radical gender ideology that has preyed on Texas children under the guise of ‘care,’” said Attorney General Ken Paxton at the time of the settlement. “Texas Children’s has agreed to pay millions back to Texas. The detransition clinic, which is the first of its kind, must open within months. Activist doctors who harmed children have been fired. This settlement sends an unmistakable message: if you put radical ideology over children's health, my office will go after you. We will continue to lead the way in stopping the far-left’s radical gender agenda.”
Vanessa Sivadge, founder of Protecting Texas Children and the clinic whistleblower who was fired for reporting on the use of Texas Medicaid to cover sex changes for children, expressed her gratitude to those who made the opening of this clinic possible.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude once again to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and my attorneys at the Burke Law Group for their extraordinary dedication, sacrifice, and tireless efforts throughout this fight. Their commitment helped turn a painful and difficult chapter into an opportunity for meaningful change,” Sivadge wrote. “I think of all the detransitioners who have suffered in silence, been dismissed, and fought desperately to have their voices heard. This win is for them.”
