Catholic Group Debunks “Catholics for Choice” Ad

MN adThe Catholic Defense League of Minnesota (CDLMN) has launched a newspaper and billboard campaign designed to counter a deceptive ad propagated by the dissident group, Catholics for Choice, which claimed abortion was a “social justice issue.”

According to the CDLMN, their campaign kicked off with a full-page ad in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Sunday that challenges a recent deceptive pro-abortion ad by the dissident “Catholics for Choice” organization. The League’s ad makes Catholic teaching on abortion clear by citing the Catechism of the Catholic Church and recommending that people sign an online petition opposing the public funding of abortion.

As a follow up to the newspaper ad, the League also posted a billboard with the same message on a busy highway where it will receive an estimated 28,000 views per day.

The ads are in direct opposition to the Soros-funded ad campaign run by Catholics for Choice which featured a variety of Catholic women praising a woman’s right to choose and claiming that “public funding of abortion is a Catholic social justice issue.”

Run in a number of major cities throughout the U.S., the ad was swiftly condemned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) who blasted the organization for using the name “Catholic” and claiming to speak for the faithful even though it has no affiliation with the Church.

“ . . . [T]he CFC pits the needs of pregnant women against those of their unborn children. This is a false choice. Catholics and all people of good will are called to love them both," writes Cardinal Timothy Dolan, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro Life Activities.

“Our campaign seeks to set the record straight on what is authentic Catholic teaching on abortion,” said Val Baertlein, spokesperson for CDLMN. “There is absolutely no basis for associating the word ‘Catholic’ with ‘abortion’ as a ‘social justice value.’ We can’t allow dissidents to misinform Catholics on this important issue, especially during an election season.”
