Can Music Played ay 432 Hz Heal You?

BP: "There are lots of people who believe people can be healed by music played at 432 Hz rather than the standard 440 Hz because this frequency is mathematically aligned with the universe. Is there any truth to this?"

Very little, I'm afraid.

For those who are not familiar with this belief, it's based on the way music is tuned. The note A in the middle of the treble staff is supposed to be tuned to 440 Hz. In fact, the International Standards Organization actually issued guidelines to this effect back in the 1950s.

However, there are some who say that 432 Hz is mathematically consistent with the universe and all music based on 432 Hz transmits beneficial healing energy. Music tuned to 432 Hz is also said to be easier on the ears and more conducive to meditative states.

How much of these claims are true?

Let's start with the assertion that 432 Hz is mathematically consistent with the universe. There is no accepted result in physics, astronomy, acoustics, or mathematics demonstrating that 432 Hz is a fundamental frequency of the universe.

As this article states, 432 Hz is a reference pitch with a value that is NOT derived from physics. All reference pitches, including 440 Hz (the international standard), 415 Hz (Baroque tuning), and 444 Hz (used by some orchestras) are valid and none correspond to any fundamental constant of nature.

As the author states, "From a scientific standpoint, 432 Hz is a culturally defined tuning reference, not a property of the universe. While individuals may prefer or artistically choose this tuning, preference should not be conflated with physical law."

As for claims that 432 Hz music has healing qualities, there is some evidence of health benefits but there are important caveats to consider.

For example, a 2019 double-blind crossover pilot study directly compared music tuned to 432 Hz versus 440 Hz. and found some differences in measures such as heart rate and subjective relaxation; however, it was a very small pilot study which was not intended to prove anything, just to determine if it deserved further investigation.

More recently, a 2025 randomized crossover trial involving 43 cancer patients compared a sound intervention tuned to 432 Hz with one at 443 Hz. Both produced psychological benefits. Some cardiovascular measures favored 432 Hz, including pulse-wave velocity, while several other differences were not statistically significant between the tunings. The researchers concluded that they could not determine whether the results were caused specifically by 432 Hz or simply because the lower tuning was perceived as more pleasant or relaxing.

Other studies looking at so-called "healing frequencies" report promising findings, but they also admit to small samples, methodological differences, inadequate controls, and lack of large-scale replication.

In other words, the idea and 432 Hz can heal and is aligned with the mathematics of the universe is more the product of the New Age imagination than with objective reality.

As this article explains there is much to be said for the positive effects of music so enjoy your favorite music - regardless of the Hz!!
