WGR10195 - The Catholic Social Workers Ethos and Persons with Disabilities

12/9/2010

(Program 10195) Our guests maintain that we will see many changes to the traditional services provided to those with disabilities - both short term and long term - and the way the services are provided. Individual autonomy and the civil rights of a person with disabilities will compete with utilitarian systems of care. Standards already in use to determine eligibility of services, such as the quality of life index, will be ratcheted up, and the health and welfare policies for individuals will most likely be influenced by inputs as diverse as the managed care industry, government entities, funded research, unions, employers, and consumer advocacy groups. How will social workers define themselves, what will be the role of the Catholic social worker, and how will the disabled person acquire the help he needs? Program Guests: Drs. Michael and Lisa Patchner
