St. John of the Cross tells us that the soul can be compared to a glass window upon which a ray of sunlight shines. If the glass is dirty, the ray cannot illuminate it, or transform it completely into its light since its illumination is proportionate to its clearness.
If, on the other hand, the glass is absolutely clean and spotless, it will be illuminated and transformed in such a way as to appear to be the luminous ray itself, and will give the same light as it does. This, in essence, is the work of purgation, a process of purification whereby the soul becomes that clean glass, transformed by the Divine Life itself and luminous with Its radiant presence.
