WGS11097 - Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Carmelite Spirituality

7/16/2021

(Program WGS11097)
Guest: Fr. Matthias of the Immaculate Heart, O.C.D.

Today is July 16th, the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Carmelite heritage dates all the way back to the prophet Elijah and the cave-dwelling hermits of Mount Carmel who called themselves his descendants. Known as the Hermits of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, they held Our Lady in high esteem and were her spiritual sons. Tradition tells us it was the evening of July 16th, 1251, when St. Simon Stock, the Father General of the Order, was visited in his cell by our Blessed Mother who came to him in a vision, and entrusted to him the brown Scapular. This gift from heaven was to become the most deeply rooted symbol of Carmel’s mission. Our guest today will talk with us about this mission, the Carmelite spirituality, and the woman from whom it springs.
