While Catholic social teaching finds its roots firmly anchored in Revelation, it was first articulated as such in 1891 by Pope Leo the Thirteenth in his encyclical letter, Rerum Novarum. Written in response to the challenges facing Europe due to the industrial revolution and the societal changes it spawned, he addressed ideologies and governmental systems that threatened justice, the rights of the human person, and the common good in general. Here to talk with us about Catholic social teaching and its importance right now is Samuel Gregg, Director of Research at the Acton Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and author of several books including, “Reason, Faith, and the Struggle for Western Civilization.
