You remember the old joke about the lost driver asking for directions, and the local yokel who tells him, “Well, fact is, you can’t get there from here!”

Though this joke makes us chuckle because of its lack of logical consistency, we often act as if such a thing were true when we consider the need to forgive our enemy or seek forgiveness from God or someone we have hurt.

Is it possible to get from an unforgiving heart or the shame of our own sin to the act of forgiving our offender or asking God for forgiveness for our sin? What does that route look like?
