This week they discuss the placebo effect and how New Age uses this. Placebo was used in WWII when an anesthesiologist named Henry Beecher ran out of painkillers and used saline. He told them it was the painkiller and the patients relaxed. Sue says it’s easy to see how someone can walk away from a Reiki or reflexology or acupuncture session and be totally convinced that they were healed or at least helped in some way – even though the treatments were as useless as that saline solution used by Dr. Beecher.
