Pope Benedict’s Spiritual Advice: “Stand firm in the faith! Do not be confused!”

In a short but moving testament to the Lord which was written just a year after he assumed the Chair of Peter, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI thanked God for guiding him “through all kinds of confusion” and issued a plea to all those who were entrusted to his service in the church to “Stand firm in the faith! Do not be confused!”

Without a moment’s hesitation

March 21
“Lent is a time of going very deeply into ourselves… What is it that stands between us and God? Between us and our brothers and sisters? Between us and life, the life of the Spirit? Whatever it is, let us relentlessly tear it out, without a moment’s hesitation.”
-Catherine Doherty

The arms of faith

March 20
“Lent is like a long ‘retreat’ during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual ‘combat’ which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our Baptism.”
-Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Contemplate the face of Jesus

December 31
“May the Virgin Mary… help us to contemplate the face of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. May she sustain us and accompany us in this New Year: and may she obtain for us and for the whole world the gift of peace. Amen!”
-Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Today’s Reflection:
Where is God leading you in 2022? Spend time with the Lord this week asking Jesus and Mary to send you the grace of wisdom through the power of the Holy Spirit.

A healing message of peace

December 29
“The birth of Christ brought a healing message of peace to the world, but to receive it, faith and humility are required: Who has time to listen to His word and to become enfolded and entranced by His love?”
-Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Today’s Reflection:
Ask Our Lady to share with you her faith and humility that you might enter into the fullness of God’s peace and love as you continue your journey through the Christmas season. How can you bring this peace and love to others?

He becomes a child

December 14
“God’s sign is his humility. God’s sign is that he makes himself small; he becomes a child; he lets us touch him and he asks for our love. How we would prefer a different sign, an imposing, irresistible sign of God’s power and greatness! But his sign summons us to faith and love, and thus it gives us hope: this is what God is like. He has power, he is Goodness itself. He invites us to become like him. Yes indeed, we become like God if we allow ourselves to be shaped by this sign; if we ourselves learn humility and hence true greatness; if we renounce violence and use only the weapons of truth and love.”
– Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Today’s Reflection:
How can I use the “weapons of truth and love” today? How will that change my heart into a place of humility, and ultimately, greatness?

Pope Benedict XVI on the Most Holy Rosary

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Speaking just days before the feast of the Most Holy Rosary in 2010, then Pope Benedict XVI advised the faithful to pray the rosary daily and use it to meditate on the mysteries of Christ “in union with Mary, the Virgin at prayer” which “strengthens us all in faith, hope and charity.”
