Alumni to File Canon Law Suit Against Georgetown University

Academy Award winner William Peter Blatty, whose best-selling book and blockbuster film The Exorcist were situated at his alma mater, Georgetown University, announced today that he will lead alumni, students and other members of the new Father King Society to petition the Catholic Church for remedies up to and including the possible removal or suspension of top-ranked Georgetown’s right to call itself Catholic or Jesuit in its fundraising and representations to applicants.

Georgetown Downplays Sebelius Invite

Although they have not yet rescinded an invitation to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to speak at a graduation ceremony later this month, Georgetown University is feeling the pressure of thousands of letters of protest and has amended its statement to downplay Sebelius’ participation in their graduation festivities.

Pope: Catholic Education Most Urgent Challenge Facing US Church

While addressing a group of U.S. Bishops on Saturday during their ad limina visit to Rome, Pope Benedict XVI said “providing young people with a sound education in the faith represents the most urgent internal challenge facing the Catholic community in your country.”

After Fluke Talk, Catholic Students Pressure Georgetown for Equal Time

Following a presentation this week by activist Sandra Fluke on contraception access, a group of more than 100 Georgetown students and alumni have petitioned University president John DeGioia to allow them equal time to present “the virtues of the Church’s teachings on sexuality and contraception. . .”

Statue of Our Lady Desecrated at Georgetown University

After a prominent statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was desecrated at Georgetown University (GU), students offended by the action embarked on a 24-hour prayer vigil beginning yesterday  in reparation for the outrage and in support of the university’s Catholic identity.
