Pro-Life Democrats Win More Seats in Congress

In spite of many pro-abortion victories in the last election, pro-life Democrats have been quietly increasing their numbers in Congress, adding five more seats to their existing 26.

Democrats for Life of America, an organization that has been working to change the party’s platform on abortion, successfully backed several pro-life Democrats for Congress with five managing to win their races Tuesday night.

“The pro-life Democratic Caucus will once again increase,” Kristen Day, the director of the group told LifeNews.com.

“This will be only the second time in 30 years that the number of pro-life Democrats increases instead of decreases,” she said. “The first time we made gains was in 2006 due to the work of pro-life Democrats all over this country advocating on behalf of the pro-life cause.”

Bobby Bright won the Congressional race in Alabama’s second district, Parker Griffith won in the Alabama fifth district, Steve Driehaus is the new congressman in Ohio’s first district, Kathy Dahlkemper now represents Pennsylvania’s third distract, and John Boccieri won in the 16th district of Ohio.

Some of the victories are much-needed because pro-abortion congressmen were on their way out.

For instance, pro-life Parker Griffith, who won in Alabama’s fifth district, will replace pro-abortion Democrat Robert Cramer. John Boccieri won in the 16th district of Ohio, replacing the retiring Rep. Regula who had a mixed record on life.

Democrats for Life are hoping to keep another pro-life seat in Congress after the results of a runoff election in Louisiana this December that will decide who will replace retiring pro-life Rep. Jim McCrery.

There are already a number of pro-life Democrats in the U.S. Senate, including Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, and Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid favors abortion but with tight restrictions.

Democrats for Life of America exists to foster respect for life from the beginning of life to natural death, including opposition to abortion, capital punishment and euthanasia.
