INTRODUCTION

Not only is it “just starting,” but its importance and complexity seems to assure that the present controversy on the place of women in the Church is not soon to be resolved. The history of the Church has shown that whenever she has been challenged, the Christian faith has emerged enriched and enlivened–the Church achieves a more profound self-understanding. The author hopes this book will serve as at least a small step in that direction.
