After reading about a surrogate mother who is being pressured by the biological parents to abort one of the three children she is carrying for them, a second surrogate mother has come forward to report being pressured to do the same. Both women have refused.

The New York Post is reporting on the story of Brittneyrose Torres, 26, of Thousand Oaks, California, who agreed to carry a child for $25,000 with $5,000 extra for two or more babies.

Torres says that when she first learned that the was carrying triplets, the couple was excited, but later changed their mind and is now pressuring her to abort the female child, citing a higher risk for abnormalities.

However, Torres says her doctor claims all three babies, who are now 17 weeks along, are developing normally.

Initially, Torres was implanted with two fertilized eggs. One of those eggs split into two, creating twins. The twins are male and the third baby is female.

The biological parents “knew from the beginning that we wouldn’t want to abort unless it was a life-and-death situation,” Torres told The Post. “We would never want to abort a baby’s life.”

She was then compelled to have a difficult discussion with the babies’ mother.

“I told her I couldn’t abort one of the children,” she said. “I could not emotionally and physically do that at nearly 13 weeks. I believe it will be killing this baby.”

Instead, she offered to adopt the baby girl, but the couple refused.

Torres then contacted The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network, a surrogacy watchdog, in an effort to fight the abortion demand.

She also decided to go public with her story after reading about the case of Melissa Cook, 47, who was also being pressured by the biological parents of the triplets she is carrying to abort one of the babies.

Both women are standing firm and refusing to cave to pressure, even though they risk breach of contract issues and have already been deprived of promised payments from the couples with whom they contracted.

This is only one of many potential conflicts that arise out of this unnatural way to bring a child into the world.

Torres is hoping that her story will help other would-be surrogates to avoid the same heartbreaking pitfalls. The best way to do this, however, is to avoid becoming involved in this bizarre practice altogether.
