Battle Raging Over Clinic Ad Referring to Abortion as “Sacred Work”

The public is responding with outrage to a video appearing on the website of a Michigan clinic that presents abortion as “sacred work.”

The ad, produced by Northland “Family Planning Centers” of Michigan and entitled “Every Day Good Women Choose Abortion” says the staff at the clinic believe in the “essential goodness” of women who choose to abort their babies and refers to a sign hanging in the facility that reads: “We do sacred work that honors women and the circle of life and death.  When you come here, bring only love.”

The video includes a quote from late-term abortionist George Tiller who said: “Abortion is not a cerebral or reproductive issue. Abortion is a matter of the heart. For until one understands the heart of a woman, nothing else about abortion makes any sense at all.”

The clinic’s ad goes to suggest ways for women to deal with the abortion, including “releasing a symbolic object into the water, planting a tree or writing a poem. It would be a way for you to memorialize the day and move forward.”

It also warns women about the right and wrong places to look for answers about their “choice.”

“Remember: Go to factual and supportive sites. Use our Resources, or Choice Link Up. Avoid the negative traps of anti-choice sites.”

“I’m sure they wouldn’t want their patients reading sites that don’t think their clinic is quite so sacred,” said Matthew Archbold of the popular blog, Creative Minority Report. “Abortion is the result of the absence of love – love which is good, holy, sacred.”

Archbald reported that as of 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 4, the clinic had pulled the video and was no longer running it on their site. “All the attention of thousands of thousands of folks forced them to pull it. That’s good news.”

However, as of Dec. 7, the ad is once again appearing on the site.
