Alabama Christmas Parade Proudly Honors Christ

piedmont alabamaDespite the usual complaints from atheists, the town of Piedmont, Alabama is going ahead with it’s plans to host a Christmas parade this week with the theme “Let’s Keep Christ in Christmas.”

According to the Piedmont Journal, the parade is scheduled for December 4 at 6:00 p.m. and is proudly boasting it’s theme which is intended to reflect the town’s strong belief in prayer.

“Kudos to Mayor Bill Baker and the seven members of the city council for their wisdom and fortitude . . . and for making this important cultural statement,” writes Catholic League president Bill Donohue.

This is in spite of protests by the anti-Christian group, Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) who insist that the theme “alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont who do not in fact have a ‘strong belief in prayers’ by turning them into political outsiders in their own community.”

FFRF Staff attorney Andrew Seidel says the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from endorsing or promoting a religion.

“A government celebration of Christmas is only permissible because courts have ruled certain aspects of the holiday, such as Christmas trees, to be secular symbols. The sentiment of ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas’ does not qualify” as a secular celebration, Seidel explained.

Donohue has issued a reality check for the FFRF. “Religion is the most defining element in any culture, and some of its traditions ineluctably become secularized over time. In this case, the refrain ‘Let’s Keep Christ in Christmas’ is simply a call to honor the meaning of this holiday: No Christ, no Christmas. That, of course, is exactly what bothers FFRF—Jesus Christ!”

Not only does he salute the mayor and city council for their courage, he goes on to “urge all municipalities across the United States to follow suit and adopt the Piedmont model of celebrating Christmas.”
