In 1646 King John IV and all his people promised their fidelity to the most holy Virgin under her title of the Immaculate Conception. Since that time, the Mother of God has been proclaimed the Queen and Patroness of Portugal.  For this reason, the Portuguese kings did not wear a crown, since it was reserved exclusively for the Immaculate Virgin.
