Pew: Support for Same-Sex Marriage Declines

same sex wedding cakeA new poll has found that support for same-sex marriage in America has dipped below 50 percent which could signal an erosion of support for the controversial unions.

Reuters is reporting that the poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center, showed that just 49 percent of Americans now say they support same-sex marriage, which represents a considerable decline from the 54 percent who said they support it as recently as February of this year.

The poll also found an increase in the number of people who believe homosexuality is a sin, which increased from 45 percent in 2013 to 50 percent today.

Americans appear to be sharply divided on whether or not businesses that cater to weddings, such as florists and bakeries, should be forced to provide services to same-sex couples regardless of their religious beliefs. Forty-seven percent said they should not be forced while 49 percent said they should be compelled to do so.

Pollsters say it’s too early to tell if this poll is an anomaly or if it represents a more signficant reversal in public opinion about gay marriage.

Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage.
