After Four Miscarriages, Couple Welcomes Quadruplets

The Irish Mirror is reporting on the miraculous birth of Amelia, Lucas, Molly and Lily Slattery who were born to Grace and James Slattery on May 26. The babies weigh between two and four pounds and will be hospitalized for the next few weeks.

The couple, who have a 13 year-old son, had been married for four years and suffered four miscarriages during that time. At one point, they gave up hope of ever having another child of their own.

“We had made our minds up, that after the fourth (miscarriage) we wouldn’t go again and then we changed our minds and we said we wanted to try once more, and it was natural,” said James.

James almost didn’t make it to the hospital in time for the births. His wife had been hospitalized for 11 weeks prior to the C-section, which was to take place on Tuesday, May 27. But the quads were on their own schedule and Grace went into labor on Sunday night.

“I got a phone call at 12.30pm from my wife in the Rotunda to say that her waters were breaking, and (for me) to be on standby and get ready to go.”

When he realized he’d never make the trip from Limerick to Dublin in time to witness the births, he went to the police who provided him with an escort to the hospital. When he arrived, he found his 31 year-old wife sitting on the end of the bed fixing her hair.

“I don’t know how you prepare yourself for four babies. I’m still trying to figure that one out myself. Luckily enough, our friends and our family have been brilliant and they have all been helping us out.”

Grace says she is grateful for all the well wishes they’ve received since their babies were born. “We are so thankful to everyone from family, friends, neighbors, doctors, staff and well-wishers for their support, prayers and hundreds of messages over the past few months, we are truly blessed.”

She’s asking everyone to “keep praying for the babies.”
