Couples Refuses to Abort Siamese Twins

A devout Catholic woman from Portsmouth, England is pregnant with a rare form of Siamese twins and is refusing to abort the children.

Lisa Chamberlain, 25, and her husband Mike had been trying for years to have children and when they discovered they were expecting last month, they were overjoyed. But then Lisa started to experience back pain and was admitted to the hospital for tests.

An ultrasound found that her twins had one body and two heads, making them decephalus twins, one of the rarest kinds of Siamese twins. Doctors immediately suggested abortion, but the Chamberlains refused.

“To me, my twins are a gift from God and we’re determined to give them a chance of life,” Lisa said. “Some might think my twins are strange, but to me they’re just special. Everything happens for a reason. Mike and I have spent over seven years trying to have children and we might not get another go.”

The couple is hoping their babies will follow the example of U.S. Siamese twins Abigail and Brittany Hensel who were born in March of 1990 and share organs below the navel. The girls are alive and thriving.
