Texas Votes to Ban Abortion After 20 Weeks

ultrasoundLawmakers in the state of Texas were able to pass a bill prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks even though they did so amidst death threats and profanities from pro-abortion groups.

LifeNews is reporting that the hotly contested bill passed 98-49 on a second reading with a third reading expected to pass by the same margin today. Once the voting is completed, abortions after 20 weeks will be banned in the state and abortion clinics will have to meet basic health and safety standards if they wish to remain open.

Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) was forced to call another special session to address the bill after state Senator Wendy Davis launched a filibuster blocking a vote and pro-abortion forces disrupted the proceedings, making it impossible for lawmakers to vote.

Senator Davis said she does not intend to filibuster the bill this time, and told CNN that she’s certain the bill will ultimately pass and be signed into law by Gov. Perry.

“But I don’t think it’s the end,” she said. “It’s the beginning of a battle line.”

In addition to loud protests being held in the streets surrounding the capitol, abortion activists have been caught on camera crying “Hail Satan” and cursing the Church. At least one abortion supporter had to be removed from the hearing and another read a profanity laced poem that equated her vagina to a gun.

Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst also received a death threat via Twitter when an abortion supporter tweeted: “A woman in Texas could shoot @DavidHDewhurst and use ‘stand your ground’ as a defense. Cause that guy is threatening all women in Texas.”

In spite of these and other hate-filled theatrics, a recent poll by The Polling Company found that after the public is informed about the scientific evidence proving that unborn children are capable of feeling pain by 20 weeks gestation, 64 percent support laws banning abortion after this time. Only 30 percent say they would oppose such a restriction.
