Disney’s Good Luck Charlie to Feature Same-Sex Couple

good luck charlieThe Disney Channel is preparing to wade into the controversial waters of same-sex marriage next season when an episode of Good Luck Charlie will feature a family with two moms.

TV Guide is reporting that the show’s producers are working on the episode, which will air in 2014, as part of Good Luck Charlie’s final season. Because this will be the show’s last season, the same-sex couple will only appear in one episode and not be part of the overall story line.

“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” a Disney Channel spokesperson told the Guide. “Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

Good Luck Charlie is an original Disney Channel sitcom which was created by Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen to appeal to the whole family, rather than just to children. The series revolves around the Duncan family from Denver who struggle to adjust to the birth of their fourth child, a baby girl named Charlotte (Charlie). In each episode, Teddy Duncan, (played by Bridgit Mendler) who is Charlie’s big sister, creates a video diary for Charlie giving her advice about situations she might encounter while growing up. Each video – and show – ends with the phrase, “Good luck, Charlie.”

In the special gay-friendly episode, Charlie’s parents arrange a playdate for Charlie with a new friend who they discover has two moms. There’s no reaction to this alternative family arrangement as one of the moms chats with Mrs. Duncan and the other is forced to listen to Mr. Duncan’s boring stories. The main theme of this episode will be Teddy’s friend Ivy who is preparing to go to college.

Comments from viewers of the various news sites reporting on this upcoming show are mixed with half applauding Disney for responding to the times and half decrying the channel for plunging into the cultural “diversity” craze and presenting inappropriate material to children.
