Prof Asks Class to Forget their American-ness

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

A black female professor at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana has been caught telling students to ignore their “American-ness” and other traits – and the school’s dean defended her!

Breitbart is reporting that the professor of Political Science 201: Research and Analysis at Butler University asked her students to ignore their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” when they write or speak.

“You would think that, when confronted with such obvious racism, sexism, and anti-Americanism, the dean would try to speak with the professor about her inherent prejudice,” writes Breitbart’s William Bigelow. “But not at Butler.”

Instead, Jay Howard, dean of Butler’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, actually condoned the approach.

“Sometimes in order to broaden the conversation and broaden the understandings you’ve got to risk making people uncomfortable. There’s nothing about a college education that guarantees you won’t be made uncomfortable. As a matter of fact, if you’re never made uncomfortable in your college education, you’re not really getting a college education.”

Howard went on to deny that the teacher’s directives were based on an assumption that students were racist or misogynist. He claimed that within 20 years, whites will no longer be in the majority in the U.S. and that they are only preparing their students for a changing world.

Changing ethnic demographics should never be used as an excuse to socially engineer students by teaching them to ignore their national heritage, gender and sexual preferences.

That the school is endorsing such conduct is reason enough for parents to give this school a pass when it comes time to choose a college for their child.
