Soros-Funded Group Plans to Undermine Fortnight for Freedom Campaign

Thanks to a well-placed leaker, the Catholic League has uncovered what appears to be a concerted effort by a Soros-funded group to instruct the mainstream media on how to undermine the U.S. Bishop’s Fortnight for Freedom campaign.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue was given a copy of a  memo sent to members of the media by John Gehring, Catholic Program Director at the Soros-funded Faith in Public Life organization. The memo contains “talking points” on how to handle the bishops, what kind of questions to ask them to trip them up and otherwise make them look bad in the public eye.

This multi-page backgrounder on the Fortnight for Freedom gives detailed instructions to the mainstream media about how to cover the upcoming events.  For instance, he suggests that reports confront bishops and “begin by questioning the prelates why the Obama ‘accommodation’ wasn’t good enough. ‘You have to ask why the bishops can’t take yes for an answer’,”  Gehring writes.

He then goes on to instruct them on how to handle the war on the Catholic Church, a notion which Gehring categorically rejects. “Several bishops have used inflammatory and irresponsible rhetoric that conflates a process of working through complex policy issues with a fundamental attack on the Catholic Church,” he writes.

As Donohue notes, while Gehring frets over the politicization of the religious liberty campaign, he neglects to mention that it was the politicization of religion by President Barack Obama that started it all in the first place.

Gehring goes on to recommend that the press try to victimize the victim by pressuring the bishops into abandoning their principles by asking questions such as: “Are you willing to sacrifice Catholic charities, colleges and hospitals if you don’t get your way on the contraceptive mandate?”

Even more outrageous, he provides a list of dissenting Catholics who should be called upon to subvert the bishop’s message.

While not everyone will agree with the Fortnight for Freedom campaign, Donohue says “there is something unseemly going on when those who work for a George Soros-funded group are quietly providing talking points to the media.”
