Obama to Announce Compromise on HHS Mandate Today

In an attempt to placate the uproar from American faithful over the HHS mandate, President Barack Obama is expected to announce some kind of “accommodation” on the mandate at 12:15 today.

ABC News is reporting that the announcement will come later today, possibly from the president himself, and is being called “Hawaii plus” because of its resemblance to a similar compromise in Hawaii where employers are responsible for referring employees to places where they can obtain contraception. Catholic leaders are opposed to this, because it is considered to be material cooperation with evil.

The difference in the new “accommodation” will be that the relationship between the religious employer and the insurance company will not need to have any component involving contraception. Instead, employees will be allowed to secure birth control coverage on their own as part of their healthcare insurance by going through the provider rather than their employer to get it.

The White House is referring to the compromise as an “accommodation” so as not to upset his base and abortion lobbyists who have been pleading with him not to “cave” to the Church.

Even though the details of the compromise remain unclear, most experts say it is not likely to go far enough to appease the Catholic hierarchy.
