Conservatives in U.S. Now Outnumber Liberals 2 to 1

A new survey by polling giant Gallup, Inc. has found that the number of Americans who identify themselves as conservative has risen to 42 percent this year.

According to CNSNews.com, 42 percent of respondents identified themselves as conservative with only 21 percent calling themselves liberal. This means conservatives now outnumber liberals in the U.S. by a two-to-one margin.

Another 37 percent of the country identifies as moderate.

These new numbers reflect a slight increase in the percentage of conservatives from the last time Gallup conducted the same survey. Polling done during the first half of 2011 found 41 percent of respondents identifying themselves as conservative, 36 percent saying they are moderates, and 21 percent calling themselves liberal.

This upward trend in the number of people calling themselves conservative has been climbing for the past two decades. For instance, in 1992, the percent of conservatives was 36 percent. While the number of self-professed liberals has also increased from 17 percent in 1992 to a high of 22 percent in 2007 and 2008, the number has been holding steady ever since while the conservative numbers continue to increase.
