Saturday, September 9, is the day when Americans across the country will remember the lives of those who were lost to the holocaust of abortion during the 5th Annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children.

Sponsored by Priests for Life, the Pro-Life Action League, and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, the National Day of Remembrance got its start in 2013 when pro-lifers gathered at sites across the U.S. to mark the 25th anniversary of the burial of 1,200 abortion victims in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

These tiny victims of abortion were discovered in 1988 by members of the Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society in the loading dock of Vital Med laboratory in Northbrook, Illinois. Monica Miller, the head of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and a board member of Women of Grace®  and other committed pro-lifers, arranged to have the remains of these precious children given a proper burial on September 10, 1988 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.

In 2013, the organizations arranged a memorial service in honor of the 25th anniversary of the burial of these remains with events held in over 100 cities and towns in the U.S. The outpouring of support for a day to remember the lives of the millions of infants who are killed in abortion every year made it quite clear that this was an event that should take place annually.

This will be the fifth year of the memorial.

The hallmark of the Day of Remembrance is a visit to a grave site of the aborted unknown of which there are hundreds across the nation.

“When people become truly aware of the reality of abortion, they can more easily cut through the lies by which some try to justify it, and the natural apathy to which human nature is inclined. Even pro-life people are thrust into a higher level of commitment and activism,” the website explains.

Increased awareness of the reality of abortion can occur in many ways - hearing a vivid description of the procedure, seeing diagrams of it or images of aborted children, hearing a woman's personal testimony of regret over her abortion - or attending a funeral for an aborted child.

Tens of thousands of these children have been retrieved and buried at grave sites across our country.

“The stories of how they were killed, how they were found, and how they were buried, along with the pictures and videos that document those events, are powerful tools to awaken the consciences of our fellow citizens,” the site continues.

“Pro-lifers should be visiting these gravesites—and other memorial sites dedicated to aborted babies—as a regular part of their pro-life witness. That's what the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children is all about.”

This national day of remembrance is now being held on the second Saturday in September, which falls on September 9 this year.
