by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist Less than two years after independent voters turned out in record numbers to vote for President Obama,  new polls are showing that a majority of the same voters now say they want a new president in 2012. The Washington Examiner is reporting that a new Zogby International poll of more than 2,000 registered voters found that 50 percent of all respondents said they want somebody else as chief executive with only 41 percent saying Obama should be re-elected. But the most worrisome part of the poll for the Obama administration found that 55 percent of Independent voters want somebody new next time around with only 35 percent of this group saying they were in favor a second term for the president. Political party was not the only criteria used in the poll, however. Interestingly, 53 percent of people who pay income taxes want to see a new president while 50 percent of those who lack sufficient income for taxation want to see him relected. Race and religion were also a factor in the poll. Fifty-five percent of whites want a new president compared to 37 percent of Hispanics and 28 percent of Blacks. Seventy-five percent of "born again" Christians want someone new, as do 59 percent of Protestants, 51 percent of Catholics and 24 percent of Jewish Americans. In other categories, 89 percent of tea party followers want a new president, as does 56 percent of small business owners. Zogby is not the only major polling center that is reporting trouble on the horizon for Obama's re-election bid.
