#BoycottTarget For New Bathroom Policy

target-logoCommentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Target is just the latest corporation to jump on the anti-North Carolina “transgender bathroom” bandwagon, but in its haste to cater to only .03 of its customer base, it has sparked outrage among their family-friendly customers and fueled a nationwide boycott of its stores.

Western Journalism is reporting on the dustup between Target and its customers after the company issued a press release on Tuesday saying they are allowing people “to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

They launched into the usual nonsense about how “Inclusivity is a core belief at Target" even though their new policy does NOT include anyone who is uncomfortable with the idea of sharing a fitting room with a member of the opposite sex who is either a transgender or a predator posing as a transgender.

The backlash was almost immediate with criticism of the company running rampant on Facebook and Twitter.

“Dear Target, I am not one to treat others cruel,” A customer named Laura Prater wrote on the store’s Facebook page. “However in your desire to be inclusive, you have failed to be inclusive to women and children. If anything change all your bathrooms and changing rooms to single stall. Perhaps you missed the recent news story in Washington State where a man kept filming women. Perhaps you have missed the other news stories where folks have used this as a way to bring harm? You need to seriously reconsider this decision. You are not above the laws to protect ALL your guests, not just the LGBT community.”

Of the dozens of comments listed under “visitor posts” on the page, only one was in support of the policy with most commenters letting the company know they plan to shop elsewhere.

“Why would you choose to allow men in the women’s restroom when every single store has a single family restroom that can easily accommodate your Transgender customers?” wrote a customer named Sandy Bell Small. “Way to go Target for choosing to protect the .03% of the ADULT transgender population over your women, children, mothers, grandchildren, teenager population. I’m sure you will say you (no) longer miss us but I’m sure the $$$’s spent weekly will be felt somewhere.”

Target customers on Twitter were just as harsh. @mrstutt wrote “Mothers, DO NOT take your children into ANY Target women's bathroom!! Not safe!!”

@neworleans_lady wrote: “Heads up. @target is now allowing men into the women's bathrooms. Be aware. Keep kids safe.#BoycottTarget”

It didn’t take long for the American Family Association to organize a nationwide boycott of the stores, a movement that is already gaining steam.

“Clearly, Target's dangerous new policy poses a danger to wives and daughters,” the website states. “We think many customers will agree. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a priority.”

If the company is really interested in being inclusive, it will take the advice of its many disgruntled customers and the AFA who is suggesting that they provide a unisex bathroom that can be used by those who are not bothered by the idea of the opposite sex using the same facilities.

“Target should keep separate facilities for men and women, but for the trans community and for those who simply like using the bathroom alone, a single occupancy unisex option should be provided.”

In response to Target’s irresponsible decision, the AFA is asking customers to sign a pledge to boycott the store. They are also urged to call Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 to let them know you have done so.
