A new study from Finland found that 20 percent of women using the controversial abortion pill, RU-486, suffer at least one significant complication, with four percent reporting two or more complications or “adverse events.”
According to a report for LifeSiteNews.com by Randy O’Bannon, Ph.D., director of education and research for the National Right to Life Committee, the new study, entitled “Immediate Complications After Medical Compared with Surgical Termination of Pregnancy,” looked at all abortions performed in Finland, surgical and chemical, performed up to 63 days after gestation between Jan. 1, 2000 and Dec. 31, 2006.
“Researchers found that 15.6 percent of those undergoing chemical abortions hemorrhaged, 1.7 percent encountered infection, and 6.7 percent had incomplete abortions,” Dr. O’Bannon writes.
This means that the risk of hemorrhage with chemical abortions with RU 486 is nearly eight times higher than with surgical abortions, with the likelihood of an incomplete abortion being five times higher than those who opt to abort surgically.
However, this is not to say that surgical abortion procedures are any safer. Injuries from surgical abortions were 20 times higher than those associated with chemical abortions, with a substantial number of surgical abortions later turning out to be “incomplete,” with a number of women returning for “surgical (re)evacuations” researchers found.
Studies of abortion outcomes such as the one conducted in Finland are not possible in the United States where the “right to privacy” prevents the collection of data regarding abortion. However, in other countries where this data is recorded, abortion outcomes are far from “safe and legal” as touted by the U.S. abortion industry.
Risks associated with RU-486, are mentioned, “at the bottom of the page in small print,” Dr. O’Bannon says, or are listed as “rare” on the Planned Parenthood website.
“Though the authors of the Finnish study label both the chemical and surgical methods of abortion ‘generally safe,’ it is clear that complications are more common than many might have been led to believe, and that contrary to expectations that the chemical method was safer and easier, the data clearly show that ‘medical abortion results in an increased incidence of adverse events.’”
